The United States Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association is a non-profit organization which exists exclusively for educational and charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  In addition to providing services for and promoting fellowship among its members, a primary purpose of the Alumni Association is to raise funds that provide a margin of excellence for the Academy and the Corps of Cadets.

While the Coast Guard Academy is primarily funded through appropriations from the federal government, it is a myth that the needs of the Academy and the Corps of Cadets are fully met by appropriated funds. Government funding does provide basic facilities and programs, but the Academy, like most colleges, depends on private financial support to deliver programs with the enduring excellence that we have come to expect.

Over the past three years, more than $4 million in athletic facility improvements have been made that would not exist without private support.  These include a new outdoor track and soccer field, field turf for the football field, and new baseball and softball fields.  The Tyler Leadership Chair and other educational enhancements have added similar value to the academic program.  The Admissions staff will tell you, it does make a difference.  With your help, the Alumni Association is committed to making continued progress in supporting the Academy's needs for margin of excellence funding.

Ways to Give

The Alumni Association accepts gifts of cash, securities, and gifts-in-kind as outright gifts and as planned gifts.  The most common donations are by check or credit card.  Checks should be made out to the USCGA Alumni Association and mailed to the Association at 47 Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT 06320 -8111.  Use the check memo section to indicate the fund you wish to support.  Gifts paid by credit card may be made by telephone to (860) 442-2683, ext 27, or by sending the information in by mail.  Credit cards may also be used to Give On-Line.

Gifts of securities, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, are usually made by a wire transfer to the Association's broker, Janney Montgomery Scott.  Wire transfers of stock or mutual fund shares should be sent to DTC # 0374 for the Association Account No. 8340-5251.  For more information on gifts of securities, call John Maxham , the Association's Vice President for Development at (860) 442-2683, ext. 13.  Gifts-in-kind, such as books, artwork, and furniture are usually accepted on an as needed basis.  Donors should have the appraised value of the gift available at the time of donation.

Matching Gifts

Many companies will match the value of your charitable gift to the Alumni Association.  This gives you the opportunity to double, sometimes triple the value of your gift.  Check with your employer's human resources department to see if your company matches gifts.  If so, fill out the appropriate paperwork and send it to the Association for verification of your gift.  Last year, over $105,000 was received in matching gifts to support Academy programs.
