Over the past few weeks I have had the honor of attending several Academy events that highlight our Link in the Chain program. At the Class of 2015 Dining In on April 9 representatives from both classes shared their thoughts on the impact of this “link.”

Distinguished Mentorship Added to Fleet of Annual Awards
All members of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association are invited to submit nominations for the following 2015 Alumni Association Awards: Distinguished Alumnus, Alumni Achievement, Distinguished Volunteer, Distinguished Service, and the inaugural Distinguished Mentorship (sponsored by the USCG Women's Leadership Initiative). Deadline is May 31.

Football: Going to the NEWMAC in 2017

News from the Institute for Leadership (IFL)
The ADM James M. Loy Institute for Leadership (IFL) staff has been hard at work on its mission to develop leaders of character through research, academic support and active engagement with the Corps of Cadets. Two recent presentations to their service academy counterparts on their leader development curriculum, as well as an appearance at a conference to discuss the IFL's ongoing research project with cadet athletes were well received.

Cadet Receives Fulbright Scholarship
Stephen Horvath, a first-class cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was recently granted a two-year Fulbright Scholarship to study renewable energy technologies in Finland beginning this fall.

VIDEO: Academy Held Service for Two Georgian Cadets
On April 1 the Academy remembered First Class Cadet Soso Makaridze and 3rd Class Cadet Bersarian Gorjoladze. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft, and family members of the two lost cadets were among the hundreds who attended the memorial service in Leamy Hall.

'97 Grad Donates Uniforms for Exhibit Honoring CG Women
“We have been a part of this organization and the service, and we’ve contributed toward all the missions in the Coast Guard, ” said LCDR Kerry Karwan '97. “Women need to be proud of that, especially the ones who paved the way for us. We’re still here, following in their footsteps.”

Applications sought for 4 Board Member Seats
Applications are requested to fill four seats on the Board of Directors for four-year terms beginning January 1, 2016. Deadline is May 31.

Cadets Gain Leadership Skills at Annual Conference
Over 30 junior high and high school students participated in the cadet-run CDR Hank and Gloria Fisher '53 Youth Leadership Conference at the Academy in February, which is intended to give cadets experience in managing and executing a leadership program.
