Distinguished Philanthropist 2009

Mr. Frederick M. Long, Class of 1952

After graduation from the Academy, Fred served three years of active duty before resigning his commission in 1955 to attend the Harvard Business School, where he obtained his MBA degree in 1957.  After working in sales for the Trane Company, he began a 30-year career with the Baltimore Aircoil Company, starting in marketing and ending up as president of the company.  In between, there were several international assignments, including time in Belgium as Director of Foreign Operations.  After 15 years as president of BAC, Fred moved on to a new company, Baltimore Therapeutic Equipment Company (BTE), which was involved in creating a new product which could replicate movements of bones, muscles, and joints for use in physical and occupational therapy.  After nine years with BTE, he retired as a half owner of the company.

A few years ago Fred Long proposed sending cadets on an international summer internship program with The Fund for American Studies and offered to fully fund the program for two cadets.  Dean Colella, along with Judy Youngman, and Brigid Pavilonis, were quick to take Fred up on his offer, and in 2007 one cadet, Linden Dahlkemper, attended the program in Prague and a second cadet, Brittany Curran, attended the program on the Greek Isle of Crete.  Since then, Fred has provided full funding for three cadets in 2008 and 2009, expanding the program to include Hong Kong.

In addition to supporting the internship programs, Fred’s generosity regularly includes support for his class endowment and for the Association’s unrestricted needs.  He is a member of the Royal Circle for cumulative giving with lifetime gifts of over $100,000.  He is a regular member of the Celestial Circle, which recognizes our top 20 donors each year.
