CGA Leadership 44s

The intent of the Leadership 44 project is to provide the Academy with eight new 44’ sailboats to replace the aging Luders yawls.  The project is a joint venture between the Alumni Association, Coast Guard Foundation, CGA Parents Association, and the Academy.  The new boats will enhance the Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program.

The current Coastal Sail Training Program provides many cadets with one of the most valuable professional development experiences during their time at the Academy.  For twelve days during 2/c summer, 5-6 cadets embark with a safety officer on one of the Academy’s Luders yawls to sail New England’s coastal waters.  The hands-on leadership and team work opportunities are great preparation for the cadets’ last two years as leaders in the Corps of Cadets.  One could argue that this experience is central to the Academy’s mission of producing leaders with “a liking for the sea and its lore.”

Unfortunately, not every cadet is afforded this opportunity.  The Academy’s four Luders yawls do not provide sufficient training space for all cadets to participate and these vessels are now over 40 years old!  To make this program available to every cadet, the Superintendent has made the purchase of eight new 44’ sailing vessels, similar to those being built for the Naval Academy, a top priority.  The Alumni Association is committed to help make this priority a reality.
