Hall of Fame Inductees & Alumni Award Winners Announced Click on the headline to learn the names of the newest inductees into the Coast Guard Academy Hall of Fame and the winners of this year's Alumni Awards. The inductees and winners hail from the following classes: 1955, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1980, 1988, 1994, and 1997. Don't miss the awards dinner on Thursday, Sept. 30 to honor this year's recipients.Board of Directors Election Ballot available online The nominating committee has nominated four individuals to be members of the Board of Directors of the USCGA Alumni Association, Inc. for the four-year period January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2014, subject to the vote of the members. All members are asked to complete the online ballot or the paper ballot located between pages 32 & 33 of the August 2010 Bulletin. Click on the headline for more information and to register.Distinguished Alumni sought for panel The USCGA Alumni Association and the Academy’s Institute for Leadership are seeking a panel of distinguished Coast Guard Academy graduates to share their experiences and insights with today’s Corps of Cadets.Alumni Association seeks VP of Development Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years fund raising experience having worked in at least two of the following capacities: 1) Major Gifts officer, 2) Planned Giving officer, 3) Annual Fund director, 4) involved in a major campaign in excess of $10 million.Info sought on Alexander Hamilton Memorial Award Starting in 1957, the Academy presented the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Award for Highest Cruise Average at the graduation/June Week awards ceremony. The award was discontinued at some unknown point in the past and we seek basic information on its history (who started it, who paid for it through the years, when it was discontinued, etc.).August 2010 Bulletin now available online

Schuster Appointed Head of Management Department Dr. Michael H. Schuster, Professor of Strategy at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, has been selected as Head of the Department of Management. Schuster, who teaches strategy, marketing, and coordinates the academy's capstone course in management consulting, assumed the role of Department Head on Aug. 9, 2010.CAPT Wilczynksi '83 appointed Deputy Dean at Yale University CAPT Vincent Wilczynski '83 has been appointed the new Deputy Dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Yale University, effective September 1, 2010. CAPT Wilczynski is currently the Dean of Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He will be retiring from the Coast Guard on November 1. U.S. Coast Guard Academy Named a “2010 Great College to Work For” The Chronicle of Higher Education has named the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, for a second year in a row.Corps of Cadets welcomes Class of 2014 The Coast Guard Academy Class of 2014 received their shoulder boards during a ceremony at the academy's Washington Parade Field here Monday at 12:50 p.m., which marked the completion of the summer training program.Football: 1/c Bennett returns after last year's academic problems After being unable to play football last season due to failing a class in comparative politics, 1/c Bennett, humbled and eager, is back to being the all-league cornerback and one of the captains for the team.2013 dominates CAPT Earle Creative Writing Contest The Class of 2013 dominated this year’s contest, with 3/c cadets winning in every category. This year’s contest saw a tie for first place in the prose category, as well as, several honorable mentions in the poetry category.At academy, basic training means learning to sail Michael Vitrano thought he could get to the buoy, turn around and return to the dock, even though he had never sailed before. The 30-second maneuver was part of his first sailing lesson at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.Offshore Sailing Team victorious in Newport Bermuda Race The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Glory (New London, CT), skippered by USCGA Offshore Sailing Team Head Coach Jack Neades, was victorious in the 9- boat J/44 One-Design class of the Newport Bermuda Race. The 47th running of the race was the third largest since the first one in 1906, with 183 yachts in five divisions starting Friday, June 18. In the News
