Link in the Chain

The Link-in-the-Chain Program (LITC) provides and perpetuates the tradition of linking Coast Guard Academy alumni with current cadet classes. This “linkage” is created between classes separated by 50 and/or 10 years. The first classes to be linked were 1961 and 2011. More recently, the classes of 1967/2007 and 1968/2008 have linked with the classes of 2017 and 2018.

Academy alumni classes become active and involved with their LITC class through events already in place within the four years of Academy life. The bonds and relationships formed, along with their physical presence and moral support, are critical to carrying on history and traditions - all part of the Academy experience and the Long Blue Line.

Every member is part of something larger than any one could hope to become individually. A link in the chain encompasses thousands of grads; a chain epitomizing sacrifices, courage, honor, respect, and commitment. They will never stand alone in the Long Blue Line.

There are a number of events throughout a cadet's career that offer wonderful opportunities for the LITC classes to connect.

A few words from Gene Bowen '65 on the program:

"Just like the 50 years since graduation, the four years associated with the Class of 2015, as Link In the Chain representative, seemed to pass in the time it took to take one long breath. Changes in academic demands, professional training and personal growth (development) were quite apparent. While 50 years brings, and demands, this evolution I witnessed no less energy, spirit or maturity in the young women and men of the class. My experiences and time with the Class of 2015 offered me an opportunity to reconnect with the Academy, the Coast Guard and my classmates. It was a pleasurable four years."
